Venetian Blinds Measurement Guide

How to Measure Your Venetian Blinds

Follow these simple steps for a perfect fit, every time.

Recess Fit Measuring

If your blind will sit inside the window recess, follow these steps.

1

Measure the Width

Take three width measurements of your window recess: one near the top, one in the middle, and one near the bottom.

Use the smallest measurement as your width.

2

Measure the Height (Drop)

Take three height measurements of your window recess: one on the left side, one in the middle, and one on the right side.

Use the largest measurement as your height.

3

Do Not Make Any Deductions

Simply give us your exact recess measurements as taken. Our manufacturing process automatically makes the correct recess deductions to ensure your blind fits perfectly within the recess.

Obstructions Inside the Window Recess

Tiles, dado rails or picture rails inside your recess can change which measurement you need to use.

Measure Between the Obstructions

If there are tiles or other obstructions such as dado or picture rails inside the recess, the distance between these is likely to be the narrowest part of the recess.

Measure between the tiles to get your recess width.

Blind Size (Face Fix) Measuring

If your window has no recess, or you want the blind fitted outside the window opening, use Blind Size instead of Recess Size.

1

Decide Your Finished Width

Measure and decide the exact width you want your blind to be once fitted, including any overlap you want beyond the window opening on each side.

2

Decide Your Finished Height (Drop)

Measure and decide the exact height you want your blind to be once fitted, including how far above the window opening you want the blind to sit.

3

Enter These Measurements Directly

Unlike Recess Size, Blind Size measurements are used exactly as given, with no deductions made. Enter the finished size you want your blind to be.

A Few Tips

  • Use a metal tape measure for accuracy. Fabric tape measures can stretch and give an inaccurate reading.
  • Measure in millimetres where possible for the most precise fit.
  • Check your recess is deep enough to fit the blind, and be mindful of any obstructions such as window handles.

Measuring an Angled Bay Window for 50mm Venetian Blinds

Bay windows meet at an angle, so each section needs its own exact width measurement.

What You Will Need

Two pieces of A4 or A5 paper or card, a metal tape measure, a pencil, and a ruler.

1

Check for Handles or Vents

If your windows have any handles or vents, measure in millimetres how far they stick out from the window frame. You will use this measurement in the next step.

2

Work Out Your Depth Allowance

Your 50mm Venetian blinds have a depth of 65mm. This is the distance the blind will stick out once fitted.

If you have no handles or obstructions, your depth allowance is simply 65mm. If you do have a handle or vent, add its projection measurement to 65mm. This total is your depth allowance for the next steps.

3

Mark Your Depth Allowance on Paper

Place your two pieces of paper edge to edge. Using your ruler, measure your depth allowance from the back edge and mark this point on both pieces of paper.

4

Position the Paper in the Bay Corner

Place the two pieces of paper on the windowsill, one on each side of the bay window corner, against the window frame. Slide them toward each other until the two marks line up.

5

Mark the Windowsill

Using your pencil, mark the windowsill at the exact point where the paper meets the window frame. Repeat this for every corner of your bay window.

6

Measure Each Width

Measure precisely between each pair of marks you made. These measurements are the exact widths for each blind you need to order.

7

Measure the Drop

For the drop, measure from where you want the top of the blind to sit down to where you want the bottom to rest, usually the windowsill. Take this measurement in at least three places across each section and use the smallest measurement.

Measuring a Square Bay Window for 50mm Venetian Blinds

A square bay has three separate windows meeting at right angled corners, so each blind needs its own careful width calculation.

What You Will Need

A metal tape measure, a pencil, and a piece of paper.

1

Measure Each Window Width

Using your metal tape measure, measure the width of all three windows directly into the corners. Check the width at the top, middle and bottom of each window and record the smallest measurement for each one.

2

Check for Handles or Vents

If your windows have any handles or vents, measure in millimetres how far they stick out from the window frame. You will use this measurement in the next step.

3

Work Out Dimension A

Your 50mm Venetian blinds have a depth of 65mm. This is the distance the blind will stick out once fitted.

If you have no handles or obstructions, Dimension A is simply 65mm. If you do have a handle or vent, add its projection measurement to 65mm. This total is your Dimension A.

4

Make the Final Deduction for Each Blind

Centre blind: deduct 10mm from the width you measured and order this as your exact size.

Left blind: deduct Dimension A from the width you measured and order this as your exact size.

Right blind: deduct Dimension A from the width you measured and order this as your exact size.

5

Measure the Drop

For the drop, measure from where you want the top of the blind to sit down to where you want the bottom to rest, usually the windowsill. Take this measurement in at least three places across each window and use the smallest measurement.
